Creative Commons Update by Joi Ito
As a valued supporter of Creative Commons (CC), I want to make sure you know what your contribution has helped us do. By donating or buying CC swag and by using CC licenses and spreading the word about Creative Commons to friends, family, colleagues, students, clients, and peers, you've helped bring us that much closer to making CC a household name. We owe our success to you, so please accept this heartfelt THANK YOU, on behalf of the entire CC Board and staff.
2009 has been a year of incredible milestones. Here's a small sampling of the highlights from the past six months:
- CC licenses have now been ported to an impressive 52jurisdictions, with more launches in the works.
- Wikipedia content is now published entirely under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license.
- We released the CC0 waiver, a new tool for contributing to the public domain, effective worldwide.
- Flickr reached 100 million CC-licensed photos earlier this year, and that number continues to grow at a steady pace.
- Al Jazeera launched a Creative Commons repository, the first time broadcast-quality video footage has been made available under the Creative Commons Attribution license.
- Third party content published on both Whitehouse.gov,the official website of U.S. President Barack Obama, and Recovery.gov is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license.
Personally, I find that what members of the CC community are able to create and achieve using the tools we provide speaks to the very heart of the free culture movement. These stories continue to inspire all of ushere at CC and remind us that our hard work pays off! I've included one such story at the end of this email in order to give you a real-world example of CC licenses at work.
I look forward to seeing what great things are achieved in the remainder of 2009 and beyond, as the commons continues to grow and thrive. It's a collaborative effort, and we need your input now as much asever. If you believe in the work we do, please continue to support Creative Commons in whatever capacity you are able: license your creative work under CC,spread the word about CC and free culture, purchase CC swag from our online store, give an in-kind gift, or make a donation today. We cannot do it without you!
